General

Units

• Units — Choose a preset: US, UK, Metric, Nordic, or Custom. Selecting Custom reveals the individual measurement controls below. The default is Metric, although auto-configuration may choose a different setting based on your country.
• Temperature — Fahrenheit or Celsius. Available when Units is set to Custom.
• Speed — mph, m/s, km/h, knots, ft/s, or Beaufort. Available when Units is set to Custom.
• Pressure — inHg, hPa, or mmHg. Available when Units is set to Custom.
• Rain Measurement — inches, millimeters, centimeters, or points. Available when Units is set to Custom.
• Distance — miles, kilometers, feet, or meters. Available when Units is set to Custom.
• Direction — Display wind direction in degrees or with an eight-point compass. This setting is visible with every preset.

Weather service

• Weather Provider — Choose Open-Meteo or OpenWeatherMap. Open-Meteo is the default and does not need an API key. OpenWeatherMap requires you to have your own One Call 3.0 key (opens in a new tab).
• API Key — Stores a separate key for each weather provider. Only needed for OpenWeatherMap.

My Location Settings

These options set how your location is determined.

• Provider — Locate the device with Online — ipapi.co, Online — IPinfo, System — Geoclue, or Disable. ipapi.co is the default.
• Refresh Interval (Minutes) — How often SimpleWeather updates the device location. The default is every 60 minutes.

Accessibility

• High Contrast — Forces the pop-up to use its main color throughout for stronger contrast. Off by default.

Panel and pop-up

• Theme — Choose System, Light, Afterdark, or Immersive. System follows the desktop appearance and is the default.
• Side of Panel — Put the indicator in the Right, Center, or Left panel box. Changing this also sets Pop-Up Offset to 0, 50, or 100 respectively.
• Order in Panel — Set SimpleWeather's ordering priority inside its panel box, from -10,000 to 10,000. Lower or higher values move it relative to other panel items; the precise result depends on those items' priorities.
• Pop-Up Offset — Move the pop-up horizontally relative to the panel button from 0 to 100.
• Use Symbolic Icons in Panel — Use single colored simple symbolic icons. Off by default.
• Always Use Packaged Icons — Always use the weather icons bundled with SimpleWeather instead of icons supplied by the current system theme. Off by default.
• Show Refresh Button — Add a manual refresh control to the pop-up. Off by default.
• Hide Error Popup — Do not show the indicator if it just says "Error." Off by default.

Locations

The selected location is the primary location shown in the panel and when the pop-up first opens. Click any saved location to make it primary.

• Add — Search for a city, neighborhood, or other place using OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service. Select a result and choose Add; double-clicking a result also adds it. Search requires an internet connection.
• Edit — Change a saved location's name or coordinates. Coordinates use decimal latitude followed by longitude, such as 40.7 -73.97 separated by a space. SimpleWeather will do its best to interpret whatever format you type, however because of internationalization differences it is easiest to do lat lon with just a space. You can check the coordinates you entered by clicking the OpenStreetMap link to verify.
• Delete — Remove a saved location.
• Move Up / Move Down — Reorder the primary location in the saved list. Select the location first, then move it one position at a time.
• Add Here — Add the dynamic device location. The provider and refresh interval come from General → My Location. This doesn't add your instantaneous location; it automatically updates the coordinates if you move.
• Add By Coords — Add a custom name and decimal latitude/longitude without using Nominatim for searching.

The default location on laptops is generally the dynamic My Location, but on desktops it is typically set to the coordinates of first boot.

Details

Pop-Up

The pop-up has eight configurable detail slots. Drag a detail from the pool into a slot, or click a detail and then click a slot. Reusing a detail is allowed.

Available details are Temperature, Condition, Feels Like, Wind, Humidity, Gusts, UV High, Pressure, Precipitation, Sunrise, Sunset, Cloud Cover, and Sun Countdown. Values use the unit and direction choices from General.

The default eight are Temperature, Wind, Gusts, Pressure, Feels Like, Humidity, UV High, and Precipitation.

Panel

• Panel Detail — Choose one of the available details to show as the primary text in the top panel, or choose None. Temperature is the default.
• Secondary Panel Detail — Add a second detail beside the primary one, or choose None. This setting is only available when Panel Detail is not None.
• Show Condition Icon — Show the current weather condition icon in the top panel. On by default.
• Show Sunrise/Sunset — Show the next sunrise or sunset in the panel. Off by default.
• Use Countdown for Sun — Show the next sun event as time remaining instead of its clock time. This is available only when Show Sunrise/Sunset is on, and is enabled by default. For example, if this is enabled, the sun time will show 6 h to sunset, instead of 9:00 PM.

If Panel Detail is changed to None while a secondary detail is selected, SimpleWeather promotes the secondary detail to the primary position and clears the secondary position.

About and diagnostics

This section isn't settings but it may be useful to you, especially if you make a bug report.

• SimpleWeather Version — Shows the installed version. Development builds also show their Git hash when available.
• Settings / Copy — Copies user-modified settings as JSON for bug reports. Saved locations and API keys are deliberately excluded. The SimpleWeather version, GNOME version, and user locale are also included for debug purposes.

Settings are saved automatically. This documentation shows the English names of the settings and wording may vary slightly in translations.
